Help text for INOTAXA Simple Search

Search terms
Type one or more search terms into the search box and hit enter. By default, INOTAXA returns results that include all of your terms. If you enter more than one term, for example:
legs yellow
the system assumes you want to search for pages that have both the terms legs AND yellow.

To search for pages which have any one or more of several terms, use OR.
legs OR yellow
You may search for terms that are as short as one or two letters, e.g.
L Finds treatments with the abbreviation 'L.' for Linnaeus.

Phrases
To search for a specific phrase, use double-quotation marks around the phrase.
"legs yellow"

Restricted search
You may restrict your search to one of our pre-defined categories. Just select the category from the drop-down list. A list of possible choices within that category will appear in another drop-down list.
Taxon: limit your search to a particular higher taxonomic group
Region: limit your search to a particular country
Work: limit your search to only one of INOTAXAs publications
Context: limit your search to results that appear only in a particular context, such as "Author Name" or "Specimen repository."
Searching on more than one category
It is not possible to restrict a search to more than one category in a simple search. Select ADVANCED SEARCH from the menu above to do this (feature not yet available).

Wild card searches
You do not need to type in all of the letters in a search term. Wildcards can be used at the end of a word, such as:
attel*
to find any result that begins with 'attel', such as 'Attelabus' or 'Attelabina'. You cannot use wildcards in the middle (e.g. 'atte*bus') or the beginning ('*labus') of search terms.

Results
In a simple search, all data accessible within INOTAXA are searched except for specimen data.

The All Results tab includes all the results, where multiple instances of the same term on a page are counted as one result.

Choose other tabs to filter the results by a particular type. If you conduct another search, this tab will remain active, but you can always change to another tab.

If you wish to change the order that results are sorted, select ADVANCED SEARCH from the menu above. (Feature not yet available)
